Department of Sociology

Introduction

The Department of Sociology was established in October of the 2015/ 2016 session and is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Students admitted into the Department are required to undergo a rigorous but well-structured course of study which is expected to develop them mentally, physically, and morally. Every activity in the department is designed to bring out the best in every student by helping them develop their talents and skills. Students, Lecturers, and Technical Staff are expected to interact with one another for quality learning to take place. This interaction shall assist students in their chosen course of study.

 

Philosophy of the Programme

The Philosophy of the programme is the promotion of the study of sociology as an academic subject. The Department of Sociology aims at providing a number of basic general courses in sociology, that will contribute to a wholesome academic programme for students and enable them to combine theory with practice in the analysis, understanding, and solution of their immediate societal as well as national problems, particularly in the areas of:

  • Man, Society, and culture

  • Rural and Urban Development

  • Social Pathology, Deviance, and Social Control

  • Social Institutions and Social Change

  • Population and Social Statistics

 
Aim and Objectives

The B.Sc. (Honours) Degree in Sociology aims at serving a number of inter-related objectives. The teaching, learning, and research objectives of the degree programme in Sociology are based on achieving the following:

  1. To introduce the student to the study of human society with a view to understanding the problems of man in a changing Nigerian, African, and world societies.

  2. To equip the student with the tools of discipline necessary for his contribution in the field of administration, industry, labour, rural development, and social welfare services.

  3. To encourage students to know, understand, and utilize tools for societal analysis, including their knowledge and understanding of other societal problems, through their studying and applying sociological and anthropological theories and methods.

  4. To help students appreciate and utilize sociology theories, knowledge, and techniques in the evaluation and understanding of the Nigerian society in particular, and the African society in general.

  5. To motivate students to apply their acquired knowledge, techniques, and methodologies in finding solutions to local, national, and international problems and issues.

  6. To deepen the student’s mind enough to enable them to play his role as a teacher and researcher.

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)
  • Admission into Obong University shall be through Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) or Direct Entry. In addition to attaining the general required standard in UTME, candidates must satisfy the general university requirements as well as the specific School/Faculty and Programmes requirements. All admissions shall be through JAMB.

  • Candidates must possess at least five (5) credit passes in relevant subjects (Government, History, Economics, Geography, Literature in English, etc) including English Language at GCE O/L, WASCE, SSCE, NECO or approved equivalents at not more than 2 sittings.

  • Candidates with Teachers Grade II (TC II) with passes at credit or merit levels in conjunction with credit passes in relevant subjects at GCE, WASCE, SSCE, NECO or approved equivalents may be considered. No subject may be counted at both TC II and GCE O/L

  • Candidates who wish to change their first choice to Obong University are required to:

    • Apply for change of Institution through JAMB and

    • Obtain Obong University Application Form

  • All candidates will be required to go through the Obong University’s Screening Exercise.

 

Direct Entry

Candidates for Direct Entry admission must possess any of the following   qualifications:

  • Two (2) passes at GCE A/L, HSC, IJMB, JUPEB or approved equivalents in relevant subjects and at least credit passes in three (3) other subjects, including English Language at GCE (O/L), WASCE, SSCE, NECO or approved equivalents at not more than two sittings

  • Three (3) passes at GCE A/L, HSC, IJMB, JUPEB or approved equivalents in relevant subjects and at least credit passes in two (2) other subjects including English Language at GCE (O/L), WASCE, SSCE, NECO or approved equivalents at not more than two sittings.

  • Two (2) passes at merit level or above in two (2) recognized NCE, OND, HND subjects or approved equivalents and at least 3 credit passes in other subjects including English Language at GCE O/L, WASCE, SSCE, NECO or approved equivalents at not more than two sittings.

  • Two “A” level passes including Government or History.

  • Diploma in Public Administration and Political Science, Administration Management, Public/ Local Government Administration, Social Work, Community Development, Industrial and Labour Relations.
