Philosophy of the Programme
The philosophy of the department is based on the premise that one of the defining characteristics of human beings is the ability to communicate their knowledge, ideas, feelings, and creative instincts in order to inform, educate and edify society and other human beings.
Mission Statement
As an ideal centre for the promotion and sustenance of interest in communication, the Department of Mass Communication, Obong University shall be a centre of excellence for preparing students for a lifetime of storytelling, using academic programs in advertising, broadcast journalism, communication studies, electronic media production, film production, journalism, and public relations through language and research tools.
Programme Aim and Objectives
As a centre of excellence, the Department of Mass Communication, Obong University shall encourage and carry out sound teaching, research, creative writing, and community service through the optimum utilization of human and material resources at her disposal. The fundamental objectives of her mission shall remain the graduation of men and women who should be able to:

Take up successful careers in advertising

Take up successful careers in television and radio journalism

Acquire an overview of the theoretical and performance content of the field of human communication

Take up successful careers in audio and video production

Take up successful careers in print and online journalism

Take up a successful career as professional communicators who help organizations and their publics adapt mutually to each other.

Possess an informed literary and aesthetic sensibility and intellectual tools to appreciate any literary stimulus and event;

Acquire the aptitude for creativity and innovation in the exploration of investment opportunities in the culture and art industry.
Admission Requirements
Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

Admission into Obong University shall be through Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) or Direct Entry. In addition to attaining the general required standard in UTME, candidates must satisfy the general university requirements as well as the specific School/Faculty and Programmes requirements. All admissions shall be through JAMB.

Candidates must possess at least five (5) credit passes in relevant subjects (Government, History, Mathematics, Economics, Geography, Literature in English, etc) including English Language at GCE O/L, WASCE, SSCE, NECO or approved equivalents at not more than 2 sittings.

Candidates with Teachers Grade II (TC II) with passes at credit or merit levels in conjunction with credit passes in relevant subjects at GCE, WASCE, SSCE, NECO or approved equivalents may be considered. No subject may be counted at both TC II and GCE O/L

Candidates who wish to change their first choice to Obong University are required to:
i). Apply for change of Institution through JAMB and
ii). Obtain Obong University Application Form

All candidates will be required to go through the Obong University’s Screening Exercise.
Direct Entry
Candidates for Direct Entry admission must possess any of the following qualifications:

Two (2) passes at GCE A/L, HSC, IJMB or approved equivalents in relevant subjects and at least credit passes in three (3) other subjects, including English Language at GCE (O/L), WASCE, SSCE, NECO or approved equivalents at not more than two sittings

Three (3) passes at GCE A/L, HSC, IJMB, or approved equivalents in relevant subjects and at least credit passes in two (2) other subjects including English Language at GCE (O/L), WASCE, SSCE, NECO or approved equivalents at not more than two sittings.

Two (2) passes at merit level or above in two (2) recognized NCE, OND, HND subjects or approved equivalents and at least 3 credit passes in other subjects including English Language at GCE O/L, WASCE, SSCE, NECO or approved equivalents at not more than two sittings.

Two “A” level passes including Government or History, Mathematics, Economics, Geography

Diploma in Mass Communication, Communication Arts, Theatre Arts or any other related field at distinction or Upper Credit level, a Pass in Mathematics, Credits in English Language, Literature in English, other subjects (Government or History, Commerce, Economics, Geography). HND (Lower Credit) in Mass Communication, Marketing, Book Publishing, Printing Technology, or related field from a recognized Polytechnic in addition to UTMME requirements.
